New Skype Exploit Can Reveal Users’ IP Addresses

If you don’t want people to be able to suss out your IP at will, you might want to be careful how you use popular VOIP service Skype. A recently uncovered exploit makes it possible — and pretty easy — to figure out the IP of any given Skype user so long as you know their user name and so long as they’re currently logged on to the service. While your IP address isn’t quite the same as, say, your address or pictures of you in your underwear or something, it can be used to track you  – and you specifically — down. Of course, if you ask the RIAA, you can always just argue that your IP isn’t really you.
To pull off the trick, all you have to do is add a specific Skype user to your list with debug log file creation turned on. By going to add the person as a contact, but not sending a request, and looking at the target’s information card, Skype will make note of the target’s IP. All anyone has to do then is dig the IP out of the debug files. Once you’ve got yourself an IP, you can go ahead and do all sorts of stuff like attack the computer or use a whois service to get more information on who the person actually is.
Granted, if you’re relying on keeping your IP secret as your only form of security, you’re already in trouble. The whois stuff, on the other hand, could be a bit more of an issue. Fortunately, until Skype deals with the issue, there is an easy fix; don’t be on Skype. The exploit only works on online users, so staying logged off effectively limits the risk. Or you could use a VPN, but not being on Skype is probably easier.
When it comes to fixing the problem, Skype is on it.
“We are investigating reports of a new tool that allegedly captures a Skype user’s last known IP address. This is an ongoing, industry-wide issue faced by all peer-to-peer software companies,” said a Skype representative. “We are committed to the safety and security of our customers and we are takings measures to help protect them.”
In the meantime, if everybody’s out to get you, you might want to stick to phones. Or, like, cowering in the back corner of the closet, draped in musty overcoats, and wearing a tinfoil hat.

The first computer worm was just a test to see how big the Internet was. It brought down 10% of the Internet

It had huge unintended consequences, but Robert Morris actually just wanted to know how big the Internet really was when he launched the so-called "Morris Worm." Robert Morris was a student in Cornell when he wrote and launched the virus on November 2, 1988. Although he didn't have nefarious intentions with the virus, he made a critical mistake in the code. The result was that the worm crashed about 10% of the computers plugged into the Internet.
The worm took advantage of a number of security vulnerabilities in order to infiltrate the computers. Once it had done that, it would query the computer to see if there was a copy of it already running on that particular computer. If the computer said yes, then the worm would stop and not run again. At least that's how it was supposed to work.
That was his big mistake. If anyone realized that the worm existed, they could've easily programmed their computer to answer YES to the worm's question, and stopped it that way. To make it harder, Morris programmed the worm to run even if the answer was yes, 1 out of 7 times.  As a result, the worm started running multiple times on many computers, and brought down about 10% of the computers running the Internet, because there were too many copies of it running.
As a result, Morris was the first person to ever be convicted under the United States Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, and sentenced to 3 years of probation, 400 hours of community service and a $10,000 fine.
