IPv6 Will Cause Some Security Headaches : IPv6

IPv6 is the next-generational internet protocol, designed to give us more IP addresses. Back in the day when no one dreamed that toasters would one day be connected to the Internet, the idea that the number of IP addresses in the world would run out was silly. Today, the growing number of connected devices means we need more IP addresses, and IPv6 is the way to achieve that. Unfortunately for network administrators, it's a new technology stack that hasn't yet been fully scrutinized by security experts.

While the most secure system is one that does exactly what you want it to do, with adequate monitoring and no additional back doors or unused functionality, IPv6 doesn't exactly fall into that category yet. It has not been fully adopted and many companies haven't worked out what monitoring and support is required. Inarecent survey by Ipswitch, Inc. two thirds of network administrators reported that only one in five of their networked devices were IPv6 ready. But sticking your head in the sand is not a good approach to network security.

Quick facts

The IPv6 threat
"There are some specific new attack vectors using IPv6 such as manipulation of route headers, rogue router advertisements, NDP spoofing, but on the whole the security concerns of IPv6 aren't something that should be a roadblock with the right monitoring infrastructure," said Chris SmitheeNetwork Security manager at Infrastructure monitoring firm Lancope.

Matthew Levine, director of Engineering at Akamai Technologies, agreed that any potential security pitfalls of IPv6 can be overcome.

"In reality, IPv6 is not inherently less secure than IPv4, but it presents the opportunity for risks because it is different," he explained. "For example, current firewall configurations may be IPv4 specific, such that adopting IPv6 would create more exposure than desired. There are some security concerns around IPv6 inIPv4 tunneling. The fundamental issue is that such a tunnel can potentially bypass a firewall that doesn't 'understand' IPv6. Whether you want to use IPv6 or not, you should ensure your firewall handles it properly."

The bury-your-head-in-the-sand approach is a concern for John Curran, president and CEO of ARINthe American Registry for Internet Numbers, which is the non-profit responsible for managing the IP addresses, including IPv6, in the U.S., Canada, and parts of the Caribbean.

"Any network facing service or capability that you aren't using should be turned off; that's just good security hygiene," he said. "Every service or capability you expose to the network increases your attack surface. Attack surface is the amount of functionality an attacker could exploit to compromise any computer. Ideal security means you want to present the absolute minimum attack surface without compromising functionality."

Levine agreed. "As a general security principle, it is a good practice to switch off anything that is not required," he said. "That said, the world is moving to IPv6, so while it may not be required today, it will be required soon. There's no question that it will happen. The only question is how long it will take.

But, while switching off IPv6 is an option today, it just means prolonging the inevitable.

"IPv4 addresses have been fully depleted from the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) free pool and the regional Internet registries (RIRs) are quickly running out of their addresses," said Curran. "The public Internet is moving to be both IPv4 and IPv6, so you will need to be ready for that regardless of whether you run IPv6 internally."

FBI Crackdown On LulzSec And Anonymous Nabs Alleged Leaders

San Francisco. Phoenix. Ohio. Three separate places, three separate arrests. Months after LulzSec officially concluded its campaign of lulz and a couple months short before Anonymous can carry out its plans to destroy Facebook, both organizations have been dealt mortal blows. or have they? The security apparatus of the United States isn’t a thing to e trifled with, after all.
Guy Fawkes
So far, the most high profile figure arrested by the FBI is a homeless San Francisco based hacker named Commanderx, who has since pleaded not guilty.
The arrests are the latest coup from international law enforcement, who’ve been rounding up Anons across the EU and the US since mid-year. These latest developments, however, were triggered by the Santa Cru County incident from a few weeks back.
While the actual trials and subsequent incarceration (that is, if they ever serve time) of the hackers might be trivial, the implications here are grave. It sends a clear message to all potential hacktivists: mess with the corporates, especially the high profile ones, and there’s hell to pay. Is this the ignominious end of Anonymous?

Two New Barnes & Noble E-Readers Out Before Year Ends

Earlier this month, rumors that a new Nook Color was due soon reached Geeky Gadgets. Turns out the rumor was true. But wait, it’s not just about a Nook color–it’s three. yes, three new Nooks are now believed to be on the verge of official releases before the year is out. Are they coming by the end of September? Unknown. More details after the break.

Nook-Color
The precious info leaked this week and was outed on Friday. The journalist responsible for the big reveal claimed possession of a slide that revealed a few juicy details on the new Nook’s and their respective pricing.
Turns out the better known Nook Smart Touch will retail for an easy $139 while a couple of still unheard of models go higher price-wise. These are the Encore and the Acclaim. No pictures available, much less any helpful details.
That’s it for now. Any other details we’d like to speculate about wouldn’t mater if the specifications come out and contradict them. Just expect the Encore and the Acclaim to be different varieties of the Nook Color whose biggest difference are in size. Either one should be the smaller of the pair, around  seven inches or so.
Stay tuned.

Miniscule Apple Logo Shaped iPhone Speaker Is Impressive

Craftsmanship-wise, of course. Powered by an earphone jack, the Apple logo mini-speaker is a DIY gadget that rates high in terms of quality. As for the sound—such a feature is debatable. But for Applefanboys blind to everything touched by the, well, Apple logo this should e an interesting accessory.
Wooden iPhone speaker
The Apple logo shaped iPhone speaker is currently selling for $30. Not bad. Though cheaper accessories are available out in the market, for that extra dose of cute the Apple logo shaped iPhone speaker is  in a league of its own.
As for specs, the all-wood Apple logo iPhone speaker has enough juice in its Li-polymer battery for 10 hours of party rock. Good enough, but certainly inadequate for a full fledged house-wrecking party in someone’s crib.

MP3 Ringtones Of NASA Soundbytes Downloadable For Free

It’s not like NASA has its own soundtrack. Though if there ever was a more suitable score for space travel, it will always be Alex North’s work for the movie 2001 that works best. Regarding these latest offerings from NASA, the space agency has outed almost 50 years worth of soundbytes that are now available as ringtones. Just download them at the official site for free and have a rocket flaring up during launch whenever your wife calls.
Rocket Launch
At the moment only four categories are available for download, including such timeless recordings as Neill Armstrong’s ‘One small step for man’ and odd notes from a satellite titled ‘beeps and bytes.’
Each category features an extensive selection of audio memorabilia. The Apollo and Mercury missions, for example, have specific clips from the Astronauts on their respective missions plus President John F. Kennedy’s speeches.
The really great enws is the soundbytes are compatible with either Android and iOS smartphones. When it coems to the former, pelase bear in mind that the official NASA app must e installed first. Other smartphones are also valid.

Samsung Pushing For Apple iPhone And iPad Shutdown In Holland

In case you haven’t realized it yet, there’s a World War on. It’s happening in courtrooms and retail outlets across several countries. its latest battleground is the Netherlands, where Samsung is trying its best to have its rival Apple’s hottest selling gadgets banned. If this ever escalates beyond legal squabbles, maybe Samsung should pull an Inception and hire a team of dream infiltrators to plant an idea in Tim Cook’s mind: You must destroy Steve Jobs’ empire. Okay, we’re getting silly. Read on for the whole scoop.
iPhone5
So this latest confrontation is unraveling at the Hague, where Samsung’s crack team of lawyers are filing an injunction to have the latest genertaion iPhone’s and the two current iPad models taken froms tore shelves.
The bone of contention in this nasty episode is over patent violations. The patent wars between Apple and Samsung have been dragging for so long now, the dispute has become rather ludicrous.
Apple has retaliated by sending its own lawyers to resolve the matter. There’s no telling whether both tech giants will vainly go a bridge too far and meet a frustrating end in a corne rof the European market. Expect an update on this front in the coming days.

Murata Outs Not Yet Officially Released Flexible Remote

So instead of going clickity-click it’s bent this way and that to achieve the desired result. The result being a switch between channels and other TV functions. Being a Japanese gadget, it’s a collaboration between an established company (Murata) and high tech university labs. The result is what’s being marketed as the Leaf Grip Remote Controller. A bit off, if you ask us. Leaf grip? Oh well, you never really know what the Japanese are going to come up with next.
Leaf grip controller
Kindly excuse the less than sterling quality pic seen above. At its current state, the Leaf Grip isn’t so far removed from a concept. It’s currently such an exceptional gadget-to-be, that anyone interested in it will have to wait for next month’s CEATEC Japan 2011 exhibition.
Those wondering how it’s supposed to work should fret no more. On each end of the Leaf Grip is a transmission circuit. On its surface are pizoelectric film that when bent, activates the photovoltaic cell sandwiched between them. Doesn’t seem to make much sense when explained in such terms, but that’s what the available product literature indicates.
At the moment it’s no use judging the viability of the Leaf Grip as a remote controlled device that transforms the general viewing experience. Might as well see if it ever reaches the market. Our bet is the Leaf Grip won’t ever make it to retail while the technology gets applied elsewhere, like for gaming consoles.
