Plastic Bags Recycled to Carbon Fiber

Mother Earth will be smiling if she has internet access and can read this post. Those plastic bags can now be rid of and recycled.
All thanks to the research conducted by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory, all unwanted plastic bags can be recycled into carbon fiber. The properties of these carbon fibers can also be fine tuned to suit different applications.
The Oak Ridge led by Materials Scientist Amit Naskar started with polyethylene base fibers. These could come waste plastic such as shopping bags and carpet backing scraps.
The component properties can be changed using “a multi-component melt extrusion-based fiber spinning method,” (What was that now?). The surface contours of the fibers can be customized and their diameters can be manipulated with submicron precision. The porosities can also be controlled.
Bundles of the plastic fibers are dipped in an acid bath.  A process known as sulfonation bonds the plastic fiber into one black fiber.
After binding, the fibers are exposed to very high temperatures. The heat causes the chemical components to turn into a gas state.
After all the gas has leaked out, what’s left is a carbon fiber.
So where is this carbon fiber used? Scientists envisioned it as a great tool for filtration or energy harvesting. It will also find its place in making tough yet affordable car parts.

Punch People In The Face With This iPhone Brass Knuckle Case, Or Maybe Don’t

If you have a cellphone, you carry it with you everywhere, so you might as well make it do double duty as brass knuckles, right? Who really has the pocket space to carry both an intelligent cellular telephone and everyone’s favorite variety of fisticuff-enchancing brass implements. Well worry no more, because the iPhone 4 and 4s Knucklecase has you covered. For the low price of $99 dollars, you can buy this aluminum — not brass — case and feel safe in your really-not-bad-enough-that-you-need-brass knuckles neighborhood. The downside? The design is hopelessly flawed. You’d be better off hitting evil-doers with a wet fish. Not even a big one. Like a guppy or something.
I’m sure most of you are familiar with how brass knuckles fit, but for the other two of you, here’s a brief overview. The brass itself fits snuggly around the part of your finger just past your second knuckle. You know, the part you’d punch people with. Also, you want the loops to fit snugly and the handle to be supported against your palm so that it doesn’t slide around when you land that hook and mangle your hand. The Knucklecase would be awful at accomplishing either of these things.
Sure, it’s cool in theory, but an iPhone, especially with the addition of a case, is way too wide, so basically you end up with one of two bad situations. If you fit your fingers in the knuckle loops where they belong, you’re going to have no palm support and you’d be just as well off prodding someone with a rubber fist.
And if you try to solve that problem, you aren’t even going to be able to hold the thing, because your actual knuckles – the second joint-y part of your fingers — are going to be sitting right in that loop (if they even fit in there like that) and the business part of your fist is going to be awkwardly pitched across the phone’s body.
On top of that, if you look closely at the promo shot, you’ll see that righties who might try to wear this thing will have their palm all over the screen, which just seems like a poor choice.
All that being said, the makers of Knucklecase assert that it isn’t to be used for face-punching. From their website under “Terms of Sale”:
This product is to be used only as a handle and protective accessory for an iPhone. Any other use of the product is considered a misuse, resulting in the forfeiture of any express or implied warranty of fitness for purpose. By purchasing this product, you agree to hold the Company harmless for any misuse of the product, which results in damage to yourself or third parties.
Damage to yourself is way more likely than damage to third parties, I think. Still, even if you aren’t going to be punching any faces with it, you’ll be hard-pressed to make this case even fit on your hand and look cool because the size of the iPhone is quite awkward. And its value as a “handle” is only as useful as rubbing your palm all over the screen. As cool as the concept may seem, it’s probably not worth $99 and the extra space in your pocket even as a conversation piece. Besides, there are actually much better iPhone defense cases out there, if you reallywant to wave your valuables in the face of would-be muggers.
There are two roads to courage, and this is neither of them.

Report: The Next PlayStation is Codenamed “Orbis,” Planned for 2013 Holiday Release

Kotaku, citing the all-knowing, all-anonymous Sources with a capital “S,” has learned fresh details regarding Sony’s PlayStation 4. The report claims the unit is codenamed “Orbis,” which could be referring to a number of things, and is currently planned for a 2013 holiday release.
Though Orbis could mean one of many things, if you combine it with the name for Sony’s new handheld, the PlayStation Vita, you have a common Latin term “Orbis Vitae,” which means “the circle of life.” Seems like something a marketing team would do, right? Also, the address orbis.scedev.net actually leads to a website, which shares a naming convention and site design with the Vita web developer portal.
The sources claim the Orbis currently sports an AMD x64 CPU, and an AMD Southern Islands GPU, and the Orbis will be capable of displaying games at a ridiculous resolution of 4096 x 2160, something far higher than what the common HDTV can generally achieve. Additionally, the report claims the Orbis should be able to display 3D games in 1080p, whereas the PlayStation 3 can only display them in 720p without things getting wiggy.
Terrible news: The source claims that the Orbis won’t even bother dealing with backwards compatibility, something that helped rocket the PS2 (along with its DVD drive) to the height of popularity, and something that the early PS3 units had, which are highly coveted to this day.
More terrible news: Again, raining on our (and GameStop’s!) parade, the source claims that the Orbis will have some kind of measure against used games. Reportedly, Orbis games will be available for retail purchase or through digital download, and — much like certain PC games — Orbis users will be required to be logged into their PSN account to play the games, which will in turn be required to be locked to one account. The source claims that if a locked game is sold back to a store and then bought as a used title, there will be some kind of undisclosed restrictions in place for the person playing the used game. Some kind of content restriction is mentioned, with users having to pay some fee in order to unlock the “full” game.
Supposedly, certain developers have been receiving dev kits since the beginning of this year, improved kits were shipped out around the time of this year’s Game Developers Conference, and beta units being planned to ship toward the end of this year.
Remember, all of this news is over a year ahead of the reported launch date, and also coming from “sources,” so not only could the news not be entirely legit, but a lot can change in the course of two years.

Half of All Mobile Phones Are Now Smartphones

All you dumbphone users out there, you are soon to be in the minority. The market share of dumbphones, or “feature phones” as they are sometimes called, has been under attack fromsmartphones for a while now, and it seems like the scales are just about to tip. According to Nielsen49.7% of U.S. cellphone owners had smartphones as of February, and considering the steady growth of the smartphone share, it’s pretty likely we’ve picked up that extra .3% now that we’re well into March.
The rate at which the smartphone share has been growing has been growing as well. In February 2011 the smartphone share was only 36%. If the pattern keeps up, predicitons are that by this time next year 70% of U.S. cellphones will be smartphones. It’s only a matter of time before dumbphones will be as antique as beepers or bag-phones.
Of the owned smartphones, 48% are Android, 32% are iPhone, 12% are BlackBerry. This lines up roughly with the adoption rate where 48% of purchases are Android, 43% are iPhone, and 5% are inexplicably picking up BlackBerry. You’ll note that Windows Phone is suspiciously absent from those numbers, considering that its sales are still small enough to be jammed in the “other” section, but considering the declining purchase of dumbphones, it’s soon to have some more space to expand into.
Brand numbers aside, the fact of the matter is that more and more people are carrying around touchscreen computers in their pockets, and if the trend continues, those people will soon be the overwhelming majority. We’re living the future, people.  Now let’s get to complaining about the lack of flying cars, shall we?

Flexible E Ink Displays Now In Mass Production

E Ink devices are about to get a lot more like paper. LG has just started mass production of the first flexible, plastic E Ink displays. The flexible E Ink displays have a resolution of 1024×768 and are 6 inches diagonal, much like the Kindle and Nook. Unlike the Kindle and Nook, these flexible displays are made primary out of plastic instead of glass laminate, allowing them to be flexible as well as 30% thinner, 50% lighter, and virtually impossible to shatter.
As if the weight and thickness improvements weren’t enough, flexible E Ink displays also promise a lower price point and improved battery time. Granted, you’d be hard-pressed to beat the battery time of traditional paper, but E Ink has some other distinct advantages, so it evens out more or less. According to an LG press release, the flexible E Ink displays can survive 1.5 meter drop test after 1.5 meter drop test, as well as considerable abuse from a small hammer, all while boasting 40 degrees of flexibility about the display’s midpoint.
The specifics to how the technology actually works aren’t exactly common knowledge, but the fact that this is actually possible — and moreover, feasible for mass production — is incredibly promising. While eReaders like the Nook and Kindle have already revolutionized the print industry, and the publishing industry by extension, the promise of cheap, flexible eReaders not unlike a magazine in form factor ensure that eReader technology is only going to become more pervasive. As much as I like to lament the death of print, the prospect of these gadgets is incredibly exciting. There’s no word on when these might start making it to shelves, or what kind of framework they’ll be attached to, but I’ll tell you one thing: When they do make it to shelves, you can bet that I’ll be there to snag one.

Gooey Joystick Solves Just About All Smartphone Gaming Problems

Smartphone gaming has quickly become a mainstay of our modern living-in-the-future culture. However, it’s not without its problems. Since most phones use a giant screen, putting your fingers on said screen blocks your view of the game. Motion controls are common on smartphone games, but are far from accurate. To the rescue is a research team from Keio University, which developed a gel-based device that converts your front-facing smartphone camera into a three-axis joystick.
Assistant professor Yasutoshi Makino explains that the elastic joystick works thanks to markings on its underside. As the joystick is deformed by the user pushing it with his or her thumb, these markings move together and apart. The front-facing camera, which the joystick sits on top of, observes these movements and translates them into motion on the screen. The technique was first developed in 2003 and was called GelForce.
In addition to not blocking the screen of the phone, the elastic joystick also provides physical feedback to the user. However, the quality of motion depends entirely on the camera’s hardware — its resolution, how fast it refreshes, etc.
As innovative as this device is, I still feel like it misses the point. One of the big advantages of smartphone gaming is that it uses a device that you already carry around all the time. What’s more, smartphones don’t need special controllers or other peripherals to play games — it can do it all thanks to the enormous screens that have become standard since the introduction of the iPhone.
Though gaming on a phone is far from perfect, attempting to solve it with an additional device defeats the purpose of gaming on a smartphone. Also, I have to wonder how many people would prefer using a gooey joystick instead of just swiping their fingers across their phone. That said, it’s an elegant solution to a tricky problem, and one that I am sure we’ll see again in a different form.

The True Cost of an iPhone [Infographic]

When the newest iPhone comes out and your saliva glands start acting up, you tend to be grounded by one particular detail: Price. iPhones, while notabsurdly expensive, still cost a relatively large chunk of change, especially if your old phone is working troublingly fine so that your only excuse for the expense is to keep up with the proverbial Joneses. But beyond all that, there’s a bigger cost, a social cost, one that’s less directly painful to you, but arguably much bigger in the long run. If you’re curious about what that might be — and are maybe looking for a way to guilt yourself into skipping a generation —  check out this interactive infographic from MBA Online. After all, people have to make these iPhones, and make them out of stuff, so who are they and what is that stuff and how much does it cost. Check out the graphic below to find out.
Protip: You have to have your mouse on the graphic to scroll it. Now give that mouse-wheel some love!
