Facebook Adding Instagram Style Photo Filters To Its App

New reports suggest that Facebook is setting its sights on Instagram, and looking to including Instagram style photo filters in a new update its about to roll out to its Facebook application. Facebook is apparently working on the new photo filters and hopes to release the new updates to its application over the coming months in an attempt to draw users away from Instagram.
Two Facebook engineers have disclosed the information about the new photo filters updates and explain that some of the dozen or so photo filters are similar to Instagram like old-style camera lenses and grainy film.

Since its launch less than a year ago its customer base has exploded and there have even been rumours that Facebook at one stage was even considering acquiring Instagram.

Energy harvesting microfluidic device lets your shoes charge a phone

Fuel cells hold the promise of never having to recharge a battery again, but until they actually become a viable alternative, we will have to continue plugging in our phones, PMPs, and laptops every night to charge.
Two researchers from the University of Wisconsin have come up with a way to recharge a battery without the need for a wall socket. Instead, you plug your device into your shoe and just start walking.
Electrical power harvesting from mechanical energy is not a new concept, and relies on reusing the energy generated from another process, in this case walking. The problem comes from how much energy can be converted using this syetms using existing methods which have only produced minimal power levels until now. However, the research pair’s system is capable of generating up to watts rather than the more typical milliwatts of power–enough for a decent charge.
The system reverses the process of electrowetting and uses a new microfluidic device that forces conductive liquid microdroplets through a nanostructured substrate. In its simplest terms, the movement of this liquid through the system creates a flow of electricity ready to be harnessed by whatever you plug in.
The idea has led to the creation of a company named Instep Nanopwer which is trying to commercialize the tech in a number of different devices. For the walking system it takes the form of three connected parts that are embedded within the sole of a shoe. The problem they have yet to overcome is the best way to connect a device to that shoe as a trailing cable is just asking for trouble.
While it may not solve the issue of always having a full battery, it certainly makes a lot of sense to reuse the energy from walking to at least partially recharge a battery. For those who commute to work on foot, or regularly go for walks or runs as exercise, it could mean a reduced power bill at least. The other good news is there is no extra energy required to walk while wearing the shoes harvesting the energy, so it really is a free power source you could work into your daily exercise and activity.

Video Game Addicted Lawyer Suspended From Practicing Law

A Pennsylvania lawyer in his 40s has been suspended from his profession for three years after he spectacularly failed to perform his duties. So goes the Disciplinary Board’s decision after Matthew Eshelman confessed that video game addiction was at fault. It seems Atty. Matthew Eshelman used to work for another firm, then left that job when his gaming undermined his work. Shortly after establishing his own practice, the video game addiction stuck, with disastrous results.
Gavel
This is actually sad news and no doubt a moment of extreme personal crisis for the person involved. Hopefully he has the fortitude to find a balance in life. It’s also indicative of a worrying trend in an otherwise beautiful industry. There’s no other way you can describe videogames these days: they are beautiful. The problem is, unlike books or film or opera music, they tend to preoccupy the overstimulated modern-age workers that comprise our global consumer society.
It’s sad, really. You don’t hear of people getting fired from their jobs because of listening to too much classical music, right? If only video games can finally attain that plateau—becoming a worthwhile diversion that’s more the object of  pleasure than a societal bogeyman that’s frowned upon.
Should this incident herald the inception of Gamers Anonymous (GA)?
