Invisible key system unlocks doors with a hand gesture

Regardless of how quickly technology is advancing, the physical key seems to remain a part of our everyday lives. Many of us have multiple keys for accessing different parts of our homes, and while we no longer need to insert a key to open a car or office door, we still carry some form of fob or card for wireless locking/unlocking.
At the 2011 Taipei International Invention Show, a so-called invisible key has been shown off and managed to win Gold in the Invention Awards during the four-day event. How do you make a key invisible but still capable of securing a lock, you may ask. By replacing the key with a hand gesture.
What the inventor Tsai Yao-pin did was to take a hint from motion controllers like the Nintendo Wiiuses, but create a system that can track the 3D movement of a hand rather than something held in the hand. His team of researchers, working out of the Technology and Science Institute of Northern Taiwan, developed a chip capable of performing such tracking.
The user can setup a complex hand gesture only they know. Then, when they want to lock or unlock a door they place their hand in front of a sensor and carry out the gesture. Obviously some kind of gesture recording procedure is required first, but once done you can no longer forget or lose your key, you can only forget the gesture.
The Gold Award has gone a long way towards confirming the invisible key is both clever and usable. Tsai Yao-pin believes it will be available commercially by the middle of 2012 as he already has interest from several companies.

iPhone 4S 16GB, 32GB and 64GB appear on Vodafone’s German website

The iPhone 4S has been spoken about for months now as either an alternative to releasing the iPhone 5, or a complimentary handset to cater for a different, more value-driven segment of the market. But could Apple really be contemplating releasing the 4S instead of an iPhone 5 tomorrow?
If Vodafone’s website for Germany (Vodafone.de) is anything to go by then Apple is going to do exactly that. Multiple listings for an iPhone 4S have appeared on Vodafone’s site in both black and white colors, as well as 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB configurations.
These aren’t specific listings for the phone models, instead they are options for compatibility with the iPhone bumpers. That could mean two things: that Apple is launching an iPhone 4S tomorrow alone, or that it is set to appear alongside an iPhone 5.
The only definite in all of this is the addition of the iPhone 4S as a model on the Vodafone site. There is clearly no reason to add such entries unless the phone exists, and the entries appear for anumber of accessories, not just the bumpers. The chances we’ll see the 4S tomorrow have gone up in my estimation after seeing this.
Will we also see an iPhone 5 tomorrow? I think if we don’t then Apple’s share price may take a major hit as it’s the expected device everyone is waiting for them to release. So I’m now expecting a new iPhone in each of Tim Cook’s pockets on stage tomorrow.

Windows 7 finally overtakes Windows XP

With millions already playing with the Windows 8 developer preview, it’s hard to imagine that this month marks the second anniversary of Windows 7 on retail shelves. Widely considered to be “what Vista should have been,” initial sales of Windows 7 were very strong, and that momentum has continued to this day.
Windows 7′s global operating system market share continued to grow, but Windows XP refused to give up the number one spot on the charts. Windows 7 crept ever closer, and finally this month it has overtaken Windows XP (41% to 40%) as the most widely-used desktop operating system in the world. It’s a major milestone for Windows 7, especially considering Windows XP’s still-strong foothold in corporate environments around the world.
Meanwhile, Windows 7′s oft-maligned predecessor continues its slow, protracted slide towards oblivion. Fewer than 11% of the world’s computers now run Vista.
It will be interesting to see just how long it takes Windows 8 to slide past Windows 7 and into the pole position. It’ll have at least one advantage — a whole new segment of Windows devices. With the arrival of lower-cost ARM-powered Windows 8 tablets, sales could be even more rapid than they were with Windows 7 early on.
One thing that could potentially slow Windows 8′s ascent is the improved anti-piracy tech it will include. Microsoft won’t shed any tears if Windows 8 doesn’t rise as quickly because it’s not as easy to pirate, but those who watch stats closely might forget how important non-legit copies of Windows XP and Windows 7 were to their overall share of the market.
